The Viewing Files: 365 Movies in 365 Days - Week Thirty Four

Yes another blog post.

I did say I was busy catching up so be prepared for lots of posts over the coming few weeks.

This time round it's oldies again with a mix of musicals and comedies.

Summer Stock
Starring: Gene Kelly and Judy Garland
Original release: 1950
Synopsis:
A farmer, down on her luck, finds her homestead invaded by a theatrical troupe invited to stay by her ne'er-do-well sister.

Well there was singing and dancing and that was about all that I noticed.  That and the fact that Judy G was a farmer.

An okay film just not that all memorable though it does have Judy's famous Get Happy routine in it.
Million Dollar Mermaid
Starring: Esther Williams
Original release: 1952
Synopsis:
After overcoming polio, Annette Kellerman achieves fame and creates a scandal when her one-piece bathing suit is considered indecent.

For a movie about swimming there's an awful lot of stuff happening on land, at least for the first hour, then we finally get swimming or more precisely water aerobics, galore.

Only Esther could make a movie like this.  Still you've got to admire how long she could hold her breathe under water and the fact that her hair and makeup stayed mostly in tack during it all.

I'm impressed.

Two Weeks With Love
Starring: Jane Powell and Ricardo Montalban and a young Debbie Reynolds.
Original release: 1950
Synopsis:
The Robinson family are spending two weeks of summer vacation at a resort in the Catskills.

Ricardo makes the girls swoon in this movie who vie for his attention all while Jane dreams of wearing her very first corset and being the girl he'll choose.

Silly but fun.
Wallflower
Starring: People I don't know
Original release: 1948
Synopsis:
Two stepsisters vie for the same man.

Why they even bothered fighting over him I have no idea.  The guy was a complete wimp.
The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer
Starring: Cary Grant, Myrna Loy and Shirley Temple

Original release: 1947
Synopsis:
A high school girl falls for a much older man.

Shirley Temple all grown up and getting a crush on Cary, a charming playboy artist, much to the horror of her older sister Myrna, a judge.

Misunderstandings abound and it's just glorious fun.
Pal Joey
Starring: Frank Sinatra, Rita Hayworth and Kim Novak
Original release: 1957
Synopsis:
A singer woos a wealthy widow to boost his career.

Frankie sings and woos one woman for money, one for love and others just for sex.
Man's Favourite Sport
Starring: Rock Hudson and Paula Prentiss
Original release: 1964
Synopsis:
The author of a best-selling fishing guide actually can't fish, which causes mayhem when he is entered into a competition.

Rock as usual is his manly charming self who finally meets his match in a woman who ties him up in knots with her verbal bantering.  Truthfully she's kind of manipulative and yet somehow she makes it all charming.

Chaos ensues.
Singin in the Rain
Starring: Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds
Original release: 1952
Synopsis:
A silent film company makes its first talkie.

Pretty much one of the best musicals ever made.
