OMG I've got a month to watch how many movies???
"frantically does a tally and collapses in exhaustion and despair while sobbing uncontrollably"
I'm seriously going to blame you all for not stopping me in this madness and demand chocolate in recompense instead. Still I like a challenge (love might be pushing it a bit) so onwards it is and the marathon movie watching and catching up on blog posts continues.
Do I actually need sleep I wonder...
Johnny Guitar
Starring: Joan Crawford and Sterling Hayden
Original release: 1954
Synopsis: After helping a wounded gang member, a female saloon owner
is wrongly suspected of murder and bank robbery by a lynch mob.
The Asphalt Jungle brought me here. So I'm totally blaming that movie for making me watch this one.
Yep Sterling is my man.
As for Joan... well she didn't blink once which was kind unnerving in itself. Also her lipstick managed to last the entire movie without smearing (related side note: I totally need that lipstick).
Still despite Joan's unnerving eyes this wasn't too bad. Finally a western where women get to shoot and kick some ass.
Oklahoma
Starring: Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones
Original release: 1955
Synopsis: Several farmers, cowboys and a traveling salesman compete for the romantic favors of various local ladies.
I thought I would really like this but it was all kinds of meh from me.
Bland, boring and kind of annoying.
Open Range
Starring: Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall
Original release: 2003
Synopsis: A former solider is forced to take up arms again when he and his cattle crew are threatened by a corrupt lawman.
Oh look it's Dances With Wolves... but without the wolves... or the Indians...
Okay so maybe not quite Dances With Wolves then. Doesn't matter though as it's still a great western with beautiful long shots of scenery and great low key performances with Kevin Costner doing what he does best. He really should make more westerns.
Jeremiah Johnson
Starring: Robert Redford
Original release: 1972
Synopsis: A mountain man who wishes to live the life of a hermit becomes the unwilling object of a long vendetta by Indians.
More quiet loner type men doing their thing.
Still good even if Robert Redford's 70's hair was mildly distracting. Someone somewhere should have hired this man to do hair shampoo's back in the day, they would've made a fortune.
The Outsider
Starring: Tim Daly and Naomi Watts
Original release: 2002
Synopsis: A young widow from a Mennonite-like religious group looks after a wounded gunslinger.
Swoony feels all around. Tim Daly makes a seriously hot and sexy gunslinger, add in a forbidden love story and I'm hooked.
Totally shallow viewing and so totally worth it.
Straight From The Heart
Starring: Andrew McCarthy and Teri Polo
Original release: 2003
Synopsis: A New York photography accepts a match making match with a rancher out West.
Ignoring the fact that the two leads had pretty much zero chemistry this was an okay outing as far as movies go. There's some nice scenery and the two leads manage to play their awkward, prickly, slightly rude characters quite well.
The Ballad of Little Jo
Starring: Mmm don't know, can't remember
Original release: 1993
Synopsis: After being thrown out of her home, a young woman decides to disguise herself as a man to survive the ruthless Wild West.
It's a man's world and sometimes you have to act and dress like man to survive. Which is precisely what this character does.
A fascinating insight into the harsh realities of what the real west must have been like for a woman, especially for a woman on her own.
Foxfire Light
Starring: People with great hair
Original release: 1982
Synopsis: A spoiled rich girl used to getting her way comes up against a rancher who won't be intimidated by her.
Opposites attract and it's totally feisty and sappy and romantic and so very 80s right down to the dramatic music when something serious happens.
Loved it despite myself.
