The Viewing Files: The 30s When Everyone Had Sass and Women Wore Floaty Gowns

After watching my latest round of movies I seriously think I was born in the wrong era.  Because the 1930s are so me.  Sass and snark and witty one liners and can I just swoon now over the gorgeous clothes.

The Thin Man

Starring: She who has amazing eyebrows and wardrobe

Original release: 1934

Synopsis:  Lets drink and bicker while we solve crimes

 

The perfect 1930s life where you drink endless cocktails, float around in silky gowns and have a super cute dog all while helping your husband solve crime while you constantly bicker and flirt with each other. 

 The one liners were just glorious.  I'm seriously in love with Myrna Loy.

After the Thin Man

Starring: Myrna... again

Original release: 1936

Synopsis:  More of the above.

 

This time round the dog is the true star though Loy and Powell are still wonderful in every scene they do together.

Shadow of the Thin Man

Starring: Myrna... yet again

Original release: 1941

Synopsis:  And still some more

 

Myrna Loy shaking a martini cocktail shaker is everything I need right there.

Can she be any more glorious.

Libeled Lady

Starring: Myrna and Harlow with a side of Tracy and Powell

Original release: 1936

Synopsis:  Newspaper and fake relationships abound

 

I just love these kinds of movies. So much sass and snark and feisty women. 

Double Wedding

Starring: Myrna and Powell... again

Original release: 1937

Synopsis:  A free spirit helps a couple get together and falls in love at the same time

 

Myrna Loy deserves all the awards for her eyebrows alone.  That and her wardrobe.

Delightfully quick talking and snarky.

Man-Proof

Starring: Myrna

Original release: 1938

Synopsis:  Love and friendship 1930s style

 

The one where Myrna Loy is actually unlikable (who knew that was even possible) and the worst wedding dress ever features.

Third Finger, Left Hand

Starring: Myrna

Original release: 1940

Synopsis:  Fake marriage

 

Myrna was her lovely sassy self but God the male lead was a major bore.  Oh for the days of her and William Powell.

The Women

Starring: Pretty much every leading actress from the 1930s

Original release: 1939

Synopsis:  Women talking

 

Bitchy catty women gossiping and ruining lives... it's fun at first but that ending ruins everything.

No stars for Norma who was a soppy crying wimp and all the stars for Rosalind and Joan who were bitchy, catty perfection.
