And another theme. This time it was all about the 80s. What can I say except I'm a sucker for bad fashion tastes and cheesy films.
Splash
Starring: Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah
Original release: 1984
Synopsis: The fish movie
Really it's just about two people who have sex a lot and 'fall in love' without hardly speaking a word to each other. Now that's what I call romance...
Still it was made in the 80s so maybe that was what romance was all about back then.
Tom Hanks in his geeky, slightly slutty phase.
Pretty in Pink
Starring: Molly Ringwald, James Spader and that other guy.
Original release: 1986
Synopsis: An poor girl falls for a popular rich boy.
Great music, great clothes. Seriously if 80s clothes really had been as awesome's as Andie's I'd still be wearing them now.
A nice, sweet love story though why she didn't run off with James Spader I have no idea. Even at his bad boy best he was totally worth it. A good girl reforms a bad boy - why did they not do that movie instead?
Sorry Andrew McCarthy but you were a bit of a sap.
And yes I have watched this movie several times. I make no apologies.
Some Kind of Wonderful
Starring: Eric Stolz, Mary Stuart Masteron and Lea Thompson
Original release: 1987
Synopsis:A poor boy gets the courage to ask out the popular girl while his tomboy best friend watches on.
So it's basically a rehash as Pretty in Pink and yet it really is even better than its predecessor.
Once again a great soundtrack and strong acting by all three leads which helps make the story just that little bit more believable and I love how one of the female characters decides that she doesn't need a guy in her life to be happy and decides to figure our what she wants and who she is on her own terms.
Perfect endings all round.
Tequila Sunrise
Starring: Kurt Russell, Mel Gibson and Michele Pfeiffer.
Original release: 1988
Synopsis: A cop, a criminal and the woman in between.
Mel Gibson before he lost his looks and his mind.
And why I never realised how sexy Kurt could be I have no idea. The scenes between him and Michelle just sizzle, though she tries just a tad to hard to be like Lauren Bacall which just doesn't work.
Sexy, steamy and quite good.
Starcrossed
Starring: James Spader
Original release: 1985
Synopsis: A mechanic helps woman on the run.
Okay, I'll admit it. This movie is totally cheesy and really kind of bad in places. Terrible music (except for the lovely electronic piece that plays a couple of times), terrible clothes, terrible special effects. It's the 80's at it's worse and finest.
And yet...
I kind of liked it.
James Spader is once again on form playing a sweet, nice guy who gets in over his head and yet takes it all in his stride. Nothing phases this guy. Like seriously nothing. It also helps that 80s James was also seriously hot. It's that whole flopping hair thing.
The story is also kind of nice and sci-fi (and yeah that's a spoiler).
Weirdly I'd probably watch this again.
PS excuse the terrible poster.
Babycakes
Starring: Ricki Lake
Original release: 1989
Synopsis: Grace is an
overweight mortuary cosmetician who falls for Rob, a handsome
subway train conductor who doesn’t even know she exists.
I love this movie.
And yeah I know Grace definitely comes across as a bit stalkery in the beginning and yet it kind of works.
A movie all about finding the confidence to be yourself.
