When everything around you seems kind of crazy and your reading is taking a bit of hit comfort shows are the way to go and even better they were actually some new shows to watch this year even if the 1st part of the year started off really slow.
So slow in fact that Other Half and I did some rewatches - Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes and Luther were all cued on the our marathon rewatch session. Watching them again I remembered how good they were and still are.
After all the rewatches I then did a massive hunt for something, anything really to watch that sounded remotely interesting. A few shows were ditched after the 1st episode because Other Half and I really are a) that fussy b) that critical c) have weird tastes and d) all of the above.
Luckily enough documentary TV didn't let us down...
Rick Stein's Cornwall
Having Cornish ancestors this was totally me. And on the plus side was the fact that each episode (all 15 of them) were lovely 30 minute bite size viewing.. As usual with Rick this was a mixture of food, travel and wonderful scenery. They even went to the village where my ancestors lived for 400 years. Totally awesome.
I know. Why on Earth am I watching travel programs when I can't even leave the country. As usual my brain doesn't care and instead just sighed over all the lovely destinations.
Simon Reeve. Again. Cornwall. Again.
Seriously I'm not complaining and instead am gazing adoringly at all the cute little towns and villages.
Men in Kilts
Okay. It's a little bit different and not your average travel show (2 actors from Outlander travel around Scotland and look at all things Scottish and act like they on a boys own adventure) but really I am here for all the gorgeous scenery. Sam Heughan's Scottish accent is just an added swoony bonus.
World's Most Scenic River Journeys
Bill Nighy narrating a travel documentary and I am so there. Soothing, relaxing and just gorgeous scenery with a touch of history and culture thrown in.
I really hope he does another one like this.
After all that travel it was definitely time for some gritty crime and thankfully the 2rd half of the year delivered.
Mare of Eastown
Everyone's talking about and everyone's watching it including me. Easy to see why it won so many awards last year. Then again crime shows are my jam.
Shetland Season 6
Hello old friend. Nice to have you back and watch the entire season over 2 nights. British crime is just so good. And so short with just 6 or 8 episodes in a season.
Unforgotten Season 4
Tear out my heart and stomp on it why don't you. Because yes once again Unforgotten was awesome, only this time it left me a sobbing mess. Which you know is always a sign of a good TV show.
Vigil
Completely far fetched and kind of bat shit crazy but OMG it is still really good. So twisty, so turny and Rose Leslie was just brilliant as the 2rd lead. Someone, somewhere give this woman a show of her own - preferably one where she's a detective.
And finally after all that crime the year ended out with not 1 but 3 science fiction shows. What's a Syfygirl to do but watch them all.
Foundation
I have never read Isaac Asimov and have no intention of every doing so. Even more so after reading how confusing his books can be. Thankfully there were some writers out there who managed to untangle his mess and come up with this adaption.
And wow it is good. Twists all over the places, great acting and some awesome strong female characters. Totally worth watching and hanging out for season 2.
Loki
Tom Hiddleston. As Loki. Need I say anything more? Except so awesome.
Lost in Space
Could Lost in Space get any better. Why yes it did. And Robot become even more awesome than he/she/them was.
I highly recommend marathony all three seasons of this which is exactly what we did (part rewatch, part new watch).
So good.
